The United States Of Sandwich

Friday, September 16th, 2011

I’m sure there’s plenty of cock waving when it comes to which nation produces the greatest chefs in the World. Japan? Spain? The US? England? France? Denmark? To be honest, as long as I’ve got a great plate of food in front of me, I don’t really care. But one thing I’d stake my reputation on (for what it’s worth), is that when it comes to making sandwiches, the Yanks p**s all over the competition.

Us Brits may have invented the humble sarnie, but the Americans have taken it to a whole new level. Here the sandwiches are a proper meal, lots of good stuff slapped between whichever kind of bread you fancy. The fact that burgers sit in the same section on a menu kind of sets the tone. Now I’ve tasted the brave new world, I feel kind of sad when I think about the Prets and Eats I used to visit so often back home, especially as most of the really good ones come out of small independent shops and delis.

Anyway, to prove the point, I thought I’d show you the evidence by showing you a few of our favourites (excluding burgers) from the recent months. GET READY TO DROOOOOOLLLL.

Good morning / afternoon wherever you are.

We touched down in San Francisco on Monday afternoon, think we’re still a bit jet lagged, but we’re getting there.

We’ve only been in San Fran for a few days, but we’ve already been reminded about how much this city loves food. Every day we’re being treated to amazing grub, from stellar sandwiches, to the freshest seafood and everything in between. We’ve also paid our first, of what surely will become regular, pilgrimages to the Tartine bakery, and it didn’t disappoint.

I went to my induction morning at the SFBI on Wednesday, which was pretty awesome. Its a bit of a dog to get to, but once you’re through the doors, the atmosphere is great. It’s basically a fully functioning bakery, with a college attached. I met about half of my classmates, and there’s a really good mix of people of all ages, from all over the world. There are peeps like me who are thinking about a career change, bakers who want to hone their craft, and chefs who want to broaden their skill set. We also briefly met the don of the institute, Michel Suas. He didn’t say too much, but had a really warm and inspiring vibe about him. It’s going to be hard work, but very rewarding.

We think we’ve found a small but very nice apartment in Mission / Noe Valley to move into in a couple of weeks, which is exactly where we wanted to live, and should take some of the pain out of my commute. In the mean time, posts are probably going to be a bit sporadic, but fear not, we’ll be collecting and compiling plenty of stuff to share once we get properly settled.

Se you soon.

Selleck + Waterfalls + Sandwiches = Awesome

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

My friend Darren sent me a link to this insane blog on Friday (via his lady Thais) and I can’t stop looking at it.

It’s called Selleck Waterfall Sandwich and does exactly what it says on the tin. It features pictures of actor Tom Selleck and sandwiches badly photoshopped onto waterfall scenes. My favourite is the little animation of Magnum blowing away a ham bagel with a shotgun.

This is what the internet was invented for :-)
