I'm not sure it really damaged Vegemite sales, I do however know a lot of people that bought it just to try it and a few people that prefer it to Vegemite (heaven forbid.)

The new name 'Vegemite Cheesy Bite' doesn't leave much to the imagination.
Marmite is far superior anyway, Vegemite on crack.

Yeah, we heard about the iSnack 2.0 debacle over here. It was a total joke, but felt more misguided than cynical. What Unilever are up to feels more OTT and underhand to me. You know if iSnack affected Vegemite sales?

I like the territory they've gone to, the branding seems good however it seems a bit of a contradiction going for exclusivity and premium, but trying to involve (and sell to) as many people as possible.

Still i'd probably give it a shot. It's not nearly as cringeworthy as the iSnack 2.0 marketing suicide on this side of the pond, this should be a case study in how not to do things. Although it got more coverage for being terrible than it ever would have had if it were good. So maybe it's very clever. http://news.ninemsn.com.au/national/869722/kraft-dumps-controversial-isnack-name

I went to Shopsin's yesterday after reading this. Opted for the H6, thats the hot gravy sandwich in a bowl with jerk chicken shrimp and corn mush...nom nom nom! Amazing food and banter, will be recommending this place to any friends visiting the city. A real shame that the place has had to downscale so much in the new premises though.

Loved the idea of this recipe though so have just made a batch of the pancakes for a full house here...so good . i would usually use a pancake recipe where the eggs and yolk are separated and whites whipped to stiff peaks then folded into the yolk batter. however my kind American friends showed me this super simple method. Works perfectly for this recipe:

American Pancakes

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon white sugar
1 1/4 cups milk
1 egg
3 tablespoons butter, melted
1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions:

In a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, salt and sugar. Make a well in the center and pour in the milk, egg and melted butter; mix until smooth.

Heat a lightly oiled griddle or frying pan over medium high heat. Pour or scoop the batter onto the griddle, using approximately 1/4 cup for each pancake. Brown on both sides and serve hot.

I hold onto my hopes that this "unbranding" strategy won't work for Starbucks while they continue to peddle a sub-standard product. A real coffee culture is based on great coffee not just site specific variation to the designs of the stores, and as was proven in Australia, you cant sell a bad product to an educated market (check out this article about why Starbucks failied in Aust. http://www.abc.net.au/unleashed/stories/s2326971.htm ).

London's nascent coffee culture seems to be generating a new generation of coffee savvy hipsters who know their arabica from their robusta and won't be fooled by this hollow strategy.

Bravo on a good going-over of one of my favorite beers. A word of warning however that I feel you 've failed to give above.... it's rather strong (I can't remember the exact ABV...); but slips down easily. Unlike a pint of dirty "British", lager however the hangovers I've had with this little kitty have been morning knockers** rather than lunchtime creepers*. My friends from Ghent are enthusiasts for Vedett and advise the occasional pint of water as the night goes on if you're doing a session on it..... but that is the more refined way of the continental drinker.

selah.

ooh - there's a bar on Curtain Road that has it on tap and in bottles. can't remember the name but I staggered out of it around 3ish the other morning. Needless to say I hadn't been doing the occasional pint of water thing but still got off with a morning knocker**

**Morning Knocker: Hard hitting hangover that knocks on the inside of your head while you wake up bringing all the fear that your day will be ruined. The Knocker however can it's self be knocked on the head by a few pints of water, liter of Green tea and some healthy breakfast. You'll be fine by 11.

*Lunchtime Creeper: You wake up feeling apparently fine, you forget you were hung over and so don't rehydrate yourself. By lunchtime you feel like a pig came along and shat in your brain. An inability to function will soon follow and you are forced to go home early with intent to fall straight into bed.

20 pence for mayo? what a rip-off. The common british practice of charging for condiments is one of the reasons I left. I am suprised they don;t charge 5p per drop of malt vinegar.

They charge for condiments in australia too as the Sharminator can tell you, however it;s a great deal less offensive there as their sauces come in space ages containers which allow you to squirt sauce on your pie one handed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4nUhD92yNU

I am off to Egg for breakfast this morning. I know you love the Rothko but come on - the pancakes... oh man... the pancakes...

Mind you, I went to Enids yesterday and apart from the super hot Waitresses, they had a cranberry pancake special - same as the more boring blueberry pancake but with cranberrys instead... this really worked for me despite as you know being a griddlecake purist - unlike the sweet blueberry, the cranberrys are nice and tart, i don;t need any sweeteners in my flapjacks what with the quantity of condensed maple sap i ladle over them. The super hot waitress said blueberry hotcakes were better but after i explained this argument to her I am sure she came round to my way of thinking.

If you can get any fresh cranberries you should try 'em - after all, it's thanksgiving this week. I think a turkey sausage could work as a side ....

Great recipe. I used your base mix and free-styled a little with the toppings. Also took your advice and have a couple of pizza's worth of dough sitting in the freezer.

Have you tried Avocado and Worcester sauce yet?

Take the Avo, Cut it in half, and then scroe the flesh, right down to the skin. Fill up the hole with Worcester and eat with a spoon.
