Save Rochelle Canteen

I’m kicking myself because I should have done this a week or so ago when I heard about it, but the brilliant Rochelle Canteen in Shoreditch is in perilous danger of being closed down.

The Rochelle School, where the canteen is based, is under threat as some local residents have deemed it the epicenter of some antisocial behaviour, which in my experience is very unlikely. The food at the Canteen is simple, yet refined, fresh, seasonal and very tasty. It is also very reasonably priced. At a time when most of our high streets and communities are being eroded by the same big brands and businesses, it would be a HUGE shame for an independent, British enterprise like The Rochelle Canteen to be forced to close. Businesses like these should not only be supported, but cherished.

I also have an emotional vested interest in this appeal. The team behind the Canteen, Arnold & Henderson, use the site for the outside catering business that supplied the food for our wedding. The team there, Martin, Margot and Melanie were brilliant, and the food nothing short of amazing.

There is a short summary of the issues from Arnold & Henderson here, from which you can also download and print a letter to send off to the planning inspectorate to oppose the closure, and also an article by Partick Grant in GQ here.

I appreciate that many of you may not have been to the Canteen, or live in London, but please believe me when I say that it really is worth saving.

The letters need to be received by the 3RD MARCH 2011 so get printing!

Thanks for listening.

Fast Chick Pea & Spinach Curry

I can’t remember if I’ve mentioned it before or not, but we start every week with Macca’s ‘meat free Monday‘. Don’t hold it against us.

As a confirmed carnivores, it can be quite tough to build up the enthusiasm to cook a bunch of vegetables, but this curry is healthy, tasty, and as it uses a ready made paste, its fast too. I use a spicy madras paste in this recipe, but you can use what ever floats your boat.

Ingredients

1 onion, finely chopped

3 cloves garlic, finely chopped

1 heaped teaspoon of chopped fresh ginger

2 tablespoons madras curry paste

1 teaspoon ground coriander

1 tin chopped tomatoes (400g)

1 tin chick peas (400g)

200 ml water

150g fresh spinach, roughly chopped

Handful of fresh coriander, chopped

I don’t know much about these guys, but like a good recipe, article or food porn, this vid made me hungry. Oh yeah, and one of them rhymes Parmesan with Marzipan, which made me smile. Enjoy.

Portuguese Custart Tarts

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011

P1000142

Portuguese Custard Tarts, or pastel de nata, have got to be as good a reason as any to get on a plane and head over to Portugal. They seem to vary from place to place, but I think the best one I’ve ever had was after destroying a hog roast sandwich from these fellas at an event down the road from me. I can still taste it now. Insane.

In my (limited) experience, you can tell a good one by the spiral shape of the pastry on the base, and a slightly caramelised skin on top. As you’ll see from the ingredients list, they are pretty rich, but as they’re only small lets not worry too much about that. This recipe makes 12.

Ingredients

3 free-range eggs, yolk only

1 vanilla pod, seeds scraped out

125g golden caster sugar

30g cornflour

225ml double cream

175ml full-fat milk

Pinch of salt, small

1/2 cinnamon stick
